The cosmopolitan chicken mite, also known as the red mite, is a blood feeder of poultry but is on the birds only during the periods of feeding which are mostly at night.
The anal plate is a broad shield.
When not feeding, the mite are hidden in the cracks and crevices of the poltry house and objects within, especially the roosts, slats, nest boxes, and elsewhere.
